Koalas are an iconic animal for Australia. People come from all over the world to see the adorable “koala bear”. To call them a bear though is not accurate as they aren’t in the bear family but are in fact marsupials. They move from tree to tree carrying their young in a pouch like the other iconic Australian animal, the kangaroo. One distinction for the koala is they spend all day eating eucalyptus leaves which are actually toxic for most animals. One consequence of eating these leaves is that they use a lot of energy digesting these leaves which is why they sleep up to 22 hours a day. The koala is in danger as a result of wildfires, and deforestation.
The obverse side of the coin has Jody Clark’s design of Queen Elizabeth II in high detail. Above her head is ‘ELIZABETH AUSTRALIA’. At the bottom is ‘1 DOLLAR’.
This 2015 reverse design is of a koala sitting on a eucalyptus tree. He is staring off at something in the distance Above his head is “2015 1 OZ 999 SILVER’ ‘KOALA’.
