So many things can kill you in Australia. There are many, many animals on land, in the air, and in the waters that can kill a person. One of the most deadly is the shark. Not all sharks are aggressive but the hammerhead shark is considered one of the most aggressive. These sharks are rather unusually shaped but are built to find and eat stingrays. Sometimes humans get in the way of their quest and get bit. They are particularly aggressive during stingray mating season where they venture into the shallow waters where the stingrays are breeding. The largest of the nine breeds of hammerhead sharks is the Great Hammerhead Shark.
The obverse side of the coin has the popular Ian Rank-Broadley version of Queen Elizabeth II. She is shown here in her tiara and pearl earrings. The image is so detailed that you can see the lines in her face even in this small of a coin. To the left of her ‘ELIZABETH II’. At the top of the right is ‘AUSTRALIA’. At the bottom of the coin is ‘50 CENTS’.
On the reverse is a hammerhead shark. Above it is ‘GREAT HAMMERHEAD SHARK’. At the bottom of this side is ‘2015 ½ OZ .999 SILVER’.
The 2015 Australian ½ Silver Hammerhead Shark is a tribute to one of the many animals that can kill you but is also kind of synonymous with the waters of Australia. When you think of the waters off the coast of Australia you wonder if one of these killing machines is lurking beneath. This coin is beautiful and would definitely spice up your collection.
