Perth Mint’s Silver Kookaburra Coin was first released in 1990. It quickly became a popular series and collectors know that they can expect a new design with every issue. This year’s design was designed by Elise Martinson. While there is an unlimited mintage on this coin, this is the only year you can get Martinson’s design.

On the obverse side of this coin is Ian Rank-Broadley’s design of Queen Eilzabeth II. Here she is wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland’ tiara. To the left of her image is ‘ELIZABETH II’. To the right is ‘AUSTRALIA’. At the bottom is ‘$30 DOLLARS’.

The reverse side of the coin features Australia’s Kookaburra bird, a bird that is iconic to Australia and is known for its distinctive call that sounds like maniacal laughter. Martinson’s beautiful design shows the bird perched on a gum tree seemingly airing out its wings.  Arched above the image is written ‘Australian Kookaburra’. Inside these words is a microscopic symbol as an anti-counterfeit measure. Below the image is ‘2011 10oz 999 Silver’.

The Perth Mint has been minting coins since its inception in 1899 as another location for the Royal Mint of England. Since then, they have demonstrated master craftsmanship that has come with experience. Steeped in the traditional way of minting coins, the mint has shown that they can learn new tricks in their use of color and gilding. Along the way, they have moved from a mint that makes legal tender for Australia to a mint that accomplishes this task but also sets trends in their bullion coin creations.

The 2011 Australia 10 oz Silver Kookaburra coin is a stunning coin with its highly detailed design on 10 oz of .999 fine silver and crafted with the master hands at the Perth Mint. This coin makes a fine addition to any collection.
