Johnson Matthey traces its origins to 1817, when Percy Johnson set up shop as a gold assayer in London. Only a few decades later in 1852, the firm was appointed the official refiner for the Bank of England. Since then, Johnson Matthey has continued to expand in the bullion industry, as well as branching out into other financial endeavors. They sold their gold and silver refinery operations to Asahi Metals in December of 2014.
